Why alley garages draw skunks
Central Denver neighborhoods were laid out with alleys, and the garage typically sits at the back of the lot facing that alley. Older garages were often built on a thin slab or with framing sitting close to grade, and over decades the slab edges crack, the soil settles, and gaps open under walls and doors. Skunks dig easily in that loose soil.
The garage interior is attractive too. Stored lumber, boxes, seasonal furniture, garden supplies and bags of birdseed or grass seed create shelter and, sometimes, food. Trash and compost carts beside the garage add smells that draw foraging animals along the alley at night. When a skunk is surprised by a car pulling in or a door opening, the spray lands on whatever is closest: tires, stored items, walls and the slab itself.
Sorting the garage after a spray
- Confirm no animal is living in the garage or under the slab edge before moving things
- Wear gloves and avoid stirring up dust from nesting material or droppings
- Move stored items out onto the driveway or apron to air and sort them
- Separate hard items that can be wiped from soft items like cushions, tarps and cardboard
- Discard cardboard boxes and paper that took a direct hit; they rarely recover
- Look for where the animal came in: a gap under the side door, a hole by the slab, a missing vent screen
- Treat the slab, especially edges and cracks, and the lower part of the walls
- Check the car, especially tires and wheel wells, if it was parked inside
Garage surfaces and what they need
| Surface | Concern | Typical approach |
|---|---|---|
| Concrete slab | Porous; holds oil in cracks | Scrub with a neutralizer and rinse; seal cracks afterward |
| Unpainted wood walls and studs | Absorbs readily | Treat directly; seal with an odor-blocking primer if it persists |
| Drywall, if finished | Paper face absorbs | Treat, and replace the lower section if the smell remains |
| Garage door weatherstrip | Rubber can hold odor | Clean or replace the bottom seal, which is cheap and also helps exclusion |
| Stored fabric and foam | Holds odor deeply | Launder, professionally clean, or discard |
Does the garage problem affect the house?
- IfThe garage is fully detached and the house smells only faintlyThe odor is probably drifting across the yard. Focus on the garage and it should fade.
- IfThe house smells strongly and the garage is attached or close to a windowCheck that window and any shared walls; odor may be entering directly.
- IfThe car smells inside after being parked thereThe cabin air intake may have drawn it in. See the vehicle guidance.
- IfSmell is mostly at the alley side and the trash cartsClean the carts and the pad they sit on, and keep lids closed.
